GETTING STARTED
What is ChatGPT for Teachers and why are we offering it? ChatGPT for Teachers is an AI tool that assists with tasks like lesson planning, generating ideas, creating assessments, and drafting communications. The district is providing access as a pilot program to help save time and support instructional practice. Access is currently guaranteed through June 2028, and we will communicate any updates about availability well in advance.
How is ChatGPT different from Google Gemini? Both are AI tools available to all Westside staff, but they serve different purposes:
Google Gemini is our preferred and most secure AI tool. It will have higher usage limits and integrate more deeply into Google Docs, Sheets and Slides. Because it is part of our Google Workspace agreement, it offers the highest level of data protection. Gemini should be your go-to for everyday tasks, and it is the only district-approved tool for anything involving sensitive information.
ChatGPT for Teachers is a pilot program well-suited for instructional creativity, lesson planning, and general professional tasks where no sensitive data is involved.
Think of Gemini as your secure everyday assistant, and ChatGPT as an additional resource in your instructional toolkit.
Which tool should I use — Gemini or ChatGPT? When in doubt, use Gemini. As a general guide:
| Task | Recommended Tool |
| Anything involving student names, IEPs, 504s, grades, health info | Gemini only |
| Drafting family communications with student details | Gemini only |
| General lesson planning and brainstorming | Either |
| Creating assessments or rubrics (no student data) | Either |
| Generating creative project ideas | Either |
| Drafting staff communications with no sensitive content | Either |
